Zion Bids Farewell to Pastor Hurnyak by Cheryl L. McDonald Zion members and friends will celebrate Pastor Hurnyak's 39 years of faithful service to our Lord and his 15 years of faithful leadership at Zion at a special farewell luncheon in his honor on Sunday, September 5. The luncheon will follow the worship service, which is the last at which Pastor will preside at Zion. The festivities begin at 12:30 p.m. at Churchill Country Club and will include picture taking, songs and special remembrances. If you have not already RSVPed, please call the church office by Friday, August 27. Pastor Hurnyak was instrumental in leading numerous improvements at Zion in his 15 years of service. His love of beauty in art and architecture and his vision for glorifying God through art in the worship space brought about the creation of two sets of stained glass windows - the Tree of Life on the Frankstown Road side of the Nave and the Tree of Knowledge and Fruits of the Spirit on the opposite side. Pastor also designed the tabernacle with the icons of Mary and Jesus, John the Baptist and the angel Gabrielle that holds the communion vessels near the altar. In addition, he created the design for the mural in the Chapel of the Advent. Those who were here before Pastor Hurnyak may remember the narrow hallway as you entered from the rear parking lot and the conference rooms and library along that hallway. There was surely no room for gathering or socializing after a worship service. It was Pastor's vision that led to the creation of what now serves as our Gathering Space, providing that open, welcoming atmosphere to those who enter. That vision also included the construction of the Gerhard Lounge which has served as a serene, comfortable space for counseling sessions, meetings, Bible studies, and grieving families prior to funerals. During his 15 years, Pastor has contributed his spiritual gift of teaching the faith in 18 Bible studies that have been attended by members and friends of members. His insights and love of theology have strengthened the Biblical knowledge and spiritual growth of those who attended. Expanding our outreach to the community has been another mark of Pastor's ministry. It was Pastor's invitation to the Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute that has now led to three onsite counselors who are available to Zion members and to those in the community. For several years, we partnered with First Baptist Church of Penn Hills in worship and in sharing our facility for their summer youth program. All of us are aware as well of the numerous community groups who use our facility during the week. And it was Pastor's heart for supporting youth and music that led to Zion hosting three Wittenberg Choir concerts over the past 15 years. In 2010, Zion had its sixth successful Unified Lutheran Lenten Appeal (ULLA), with members contributing over $11,550. During these six years, we have supported several major capital campaigns, such as Lutheran Campus Ministry, Lutheran SeniorLife and Gettysburg Seminary, in addition to many local Lutheran and community ministries and missions. Pastor's vision for combining our commitment to these ministries in one unified Lenten appeal rather than the traditional monthly calendar of causes has wrought a far more significant response and richly benefited thousands of individuals and families in need over the years. These are just a few of the highlights that mark Pastor Hurnyak's leadership and ministry at Zion. What do you recall? What are your favorite remembrances? We will have a chance to share them in writing with Pastor at the September 5 luncheon. Hope to see you there! Bhutanese Refugees Find a Place to Call Home Seven Bhutanese and Iraqi refugee families have now been resettled in Penn Hills through the efforts of the Jewish Family and Childrens Services refugee program. Since arriving here a few months ago, several members of the families have been placed in jobs with a Northside industrial laundry company and all are enrolled in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes offered by the Pittsburgh Literacy Council and hosted at Zion. Children of the families are attending Penn Hills schools. >>>>Read More Marks of Discipleship |
